Dilworth Neighborhood Information and Charlotte Real Estate Resources
As part of the Charlotte real estate market, Dilworth is a distinguished neighborhood with a great deal of history.
Recognized for being the first streetcar suburb of Charlotte, Dilworth was first established by Edward Dilworth Latta around the 1890s.
That establishment totaled 250 acres and was located just southwest of the original city limits.
When Edward Dilworth Latta settled the land that would become Dilworth, he also included in the boundaries the Joseph Forsyth Johnson-designed Latta Park.
Because the community was planned in a grid pattern that was similar to the city’s original four wards, Dilworth was initially designated as the Eighth ward.
Throughout the decades, the street car drew residents to Dilworth, helping to grow its population.
Modern Day Dilworth
Today, Dilworth is celebrated for being equally committed to its past and its future. It also is touted for having a very active homeowners association that offers residents plenty of ways to get involved.
This neighborhood is known for its mature oak trees, sidewalk-lined streets and large houses.
Many of these homes represent the bungalow-style of architecture, although there are also some Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes represented as well.
A lot of these properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
East Boulevard acts as the main thoroughfare for this community and is known for its specialty stores and local restaurants.
Carolinas Healthcare System, the city of Charlotte’s largest hospital, is also located in Dilworth. Considered the area’s only Level 1 trauma center, the teaching hospital features 861 beds.

Dilworth is also well-known for its annual home tour. Since 1972, the community has invited Charlotte area residents to tour the community’s various homes. This event is always held in the fall in conjunction with the Dilworth Jubilee.
The tour is the neigbhorhood’s only fundraiser, with the majority of proceeds going toward the association’s annual budget. That budget supports the community website, Dilworth Jubilee, the annual Conquer the Canquer campaign (to protect the neighborhood’s tree canopy) and more.
The community launched the Dilworth Art Sculpture Project, which used rails from the original streetcars in the area to create public art.
