If this sounds like the kind of community you’d like to call home, then Rock Hill may be the right fit for you!

The History of Rock Hill

As with most of the region, the Catawba Indians lived in the area that would become Rock Hill for many years before the Europeans arrived in the 1830s.

But it wasn’t until later – when the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company decided to send a line through the area – that Rock Hill developed.

That railroad development only happened after nearby Ebenezerville refused the railroad company’s offer to build a line through the area.

The locals in that community thought the railroad would be dirty and noisy.

Thus, engineers moved the line two miles away, noting its location by a “rocky hill” landmark. Hence where the city got its name.

In 1870, the town was officially incorporated after two failed previous attempts.

Since its incorporation, four unincorporated York County communities have been annexed by the city:

  • Boyd Hill
  • Ebenezer
  • Mexico
  • Oakdale

Today, the 43.16 square mile community is a highly desirable place to live.
